challenge
family-centric seaside living
Craving the calm, relaxed feeling of seaside living, a busy family of four set out to create a new vacation home in Gloucester, MA. With frequent visits from extended family and friends, they needed more space—but didn’t want to lose the character and charm of their original beach bungalow. Their vision was clear: an open, efficient layout designed for connection, comfort, and sweeping ocean views.
Alongside the family’s goals, we sought to layer in the principles of biophilic design—drawing the natural beauty of the outdoors into the home. By carefully considering materials, natural light, and flow, the design not only celebrates the coastal landscape but also supports a sense of well-being and ease.
solution
By following our 5-step design process and listening closely to our client, we were able to create a home that not only fulfills their functional needs but also celebrates its remarkable setting. The color palette, material selections, and layered textures were all inspired by the coastal landscape just outside the door.
Guided by nature, we infused biophilic design elements throughout the interiors—creating a home that feels connected, calming, and deeply rooted in its environment.
Light, warm, neutral paint colors on the walls and cabinetry create a welcoming interior, allowing furnishings and artwork to bring in shifting accents of color.
To balance simplicity with personality, we selected wallpapers, tilework, stone surfaces, hardware, and lighting as opportunities for expressive detail. A carefree jellyfish wallpaper in the powder room, a luminous shell pendant in the foyer, octopus hardware in the bar area, and a dramatic, stormy-hued granite on the kitchen island are just a few of the curated touches that ‘anchor' the home in its seaside context while adding character and interest.
