challenge

shave and a haircut …. a social experience

Transform a ‘defunct’ hair salon into an inviting community barbershop.

Located in a historic, former train station, the shop needs to reflect Bedford’s proud history, but also be a place that serves the very young and the young at heart.

process

Understanding the client’s strong connection to the community was central in planning the space. The shop’s design needed to reflect this connection … it had to be about more than just getting a haircut. It also had to be a place for boys and men to socialize, and hang out.

solution

Personalized touches were at the heart of this design. We used Craftsman toolboxes at each individual barber station to establish a cool, masculine vibe, while also providing ample storage for barber’s tools and products.

The shop’s color palette is mostly neutral in color, with durable, easy-to-clean materials. Vibrant “Bedford” blue accents - the town’s color, is strategically placed throughout the barbershop. These accents (lights, furniture, and accessories) stand out in the neutral field, to create a modern and bright space, that is both cool and inviting to the wide range of clients served at the shop.

Client relationships are central to this barber’s business. We created a gallery wall of photographs (with a twist), to highlight family, friends, and community. We also added classic barbershop accessories and train signs to pay homage to the history of the space and the history of the profession.

This family-centric shop, is ultimately a place for the community to come together and hang with the friendly, welcoming barber, even if just for a short time.
